sir,

H. B. M's.Consulate-General,
Canton, 22nd. March, 1907.
In continuation of my Despatch to Your Excel
-lency No. 21 (4244/1906) of the 4th. instant, I have the honour
to state that, at a personal interview with the Viceroy today,
the question of the closure of the Canton Mint formed a subject
of discussion. His Excellency who did not hesitate to express
his disgust at the reckless way in which subsidiary coina had
been minted by the Provincial Mint, informed me that he had or.
-dered the manufacture thereof to cease for a period of threa
months to allow time for investigation. He made some allusion
to an intention of coining dollars. I took the opportunity to
point out to His Excellency that Your Excellency's Government
had entirely ceased to issue subsidiary coins in Hongkong and
had last year shipped away the whole stock of subsidiary coins
remaining in the Treasury.
I would venture to suggest that, in ack-
-nowledging this despatch, Your Excellency may see fit to put
forward for the information of His Excellency the Viceroy a few
arguments advising that the period of three months, during
which the minting of subsidiary coins is prohibited, be con-
-siderably extended.
I have etc.,
(sd.) R. V. Mansfield,
Consul-General.
Excellency
Sir Matthew Nathan, K.C.M.G.,
Hongkong.
